A shot from the project we just finished as a group for uni. Didn't end up using this as a final image but I quite like it.

Graduate Fashion Week - London College of Fashion

2011’s London College of Fashion show was not one to be missed. Aesthetically beautiful and deeply conceptual, the shows collections took reference from various cultural areas, such as traditional Russian embroidery, Spanish matadors and the 1920’s New York gangster scene. With 25 collections on show in total, there was hardly time to bat and eyelid and we were overthrown with blitzing colour and highly technical tailoring. Angela Brandy’s garments were that of the ‘Harajuku’ girl style, showered in bright popping  blues, pinks and greens. Kitsch gold chains and furry pom poms decorated shiny PVC vests and plastic skirts, combining smart shapes and contemporary fashion design.

Jaeho Choi’s overcoats and cropped trousers hit the top in the style stakes. Chic and oh so elegant, his cream and black garments were testimonial to sarafi-esque style tailoring with an element of New York gangster. Understated impact wowed the seated masses and left the audience gleaming with approval.

Charlotte Barry, the well deserved winner of The Barnett Lawson Trimmings Award dazzled us with an immensely tactile collection in deep golds and yellows. Tassled shoes swayed as the models swooped down the catwalk in knee length dresses in classic ladylike cuts.

Graduate Fashion Week - Liverpool Show

With a simple set-up for the catwalk, there was nothing to distract us from being impressed this year by the Liverpool Graduate show. There seemed to be a running theme of ethereal fabrics and solid silhouettes throughout and it was to no-ones disappointment. Colour palettes were generally set around crisp whites, clean creams and soft pastels clashed against a bolder palette of mauve, teal, terracotta and black. With little menswear on offer at the Liverpool show, skirts and full-length dresses were a plenty, with a few playing exceptions to the rule. Yasmin Kheradmandan saw in A/W11 with printed jersey all in ones, harem style pants and thick knitted balaclavas. Stylish sports luxe practicality seemed to be the idea behind Yasmin’s collection, keeping warmth in mind and the cold out with her vivid heavy knits.

The air-light colours and attention to detail really made Laura Smith’s Metamorphis collection stand out. Simple silhouettes were exaggerated with ruching and ruffles making this collection a girly girl’s dream. On dresses, free flowing fabrics were gathered at the waist to create feminine silhouettes and ladylike contours.

Ash Kabir’s wa one of the few collection to include menswear. Menswear though it may be, a feminine spin was cast over men’s designs through the use of draping downy fabrics for trousers and layering trousers under mid-length chiffon skirts. Embellishment was the main factor in Ash’s collection, with much concentration being on sequins and beaded sleeves.
